MPBCB not bitter with government

Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) president Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba has hailed government for supporting Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) with equipment valued at over K37 million.

Zimba made the remarks after the government recently presented three international standard boxing rings, headgears, gum-shields and gloves to Maba.

“We have to learn to co-exist. We appreciate the government for buying the equipment for Maba. As a body mandated to run professional boxing in the country we will be borrowing the same equipment.

“Of course we would like to have our own rings. But for now we will be hiring the same ones. We know the government is prioritising things according to significance,” he said.

Zimba hoped that boxing stakeholders will jointly safeguard the equipment to make it last long.

“It is the duty of everyone to ensure that the equipment is well used and looked after. We do not doubt that our counterparts will make good use of the equipment,” he said.

MPBCB is recognised by Malawi National Council of Sports but not affiliated, as such, it does not get annual subvention.

However, the body has been requesting the government for a standard professional boxing ring.

Maba president Pyson Likagwa, speaking during the handover ceremony, vowed to put proper mechanisms to safeguard the equipment.

“We will take good care of the equipment and those hiring will have to agree to terms and conditions,” he said.

As we went to press, Sports Council acting publicist Faith Mlauzi was yet to respond to our questionnaire.
