MPBCB to enforce payment rules

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) president Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba has said the board will no longer allow bouts to take place if promoters do not provide purse money in advance.

Zimba made the remarks ahead of the eight round non-title junior lightweight fight between Osgood Kayuni and Wilson Masamba slated for Robins Park in Blantyre on Monday.

“Due to Covid-19 pandemic we were forced to sanction some fights even before promoters deposited contractual fee [purse money]. We had to relax a bit the rules because boxers were actually pleading with us that they will collect their full amount after the bout.

“Now, we have gone back to our standards as we will be following the rules to avoid cases where boxers are duped their money,” he said.

Zimba singled out Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions as one of the stable’s that complies with the arrangement.

The stable’s managing director Mike ‘Bangwe One’ Chitenje said it was important to comply with rules and regulations to run the sport professionally.

“Boxing is a tough sport where they play with their life. We need to pay boxers handsomely and also in time. It is bad for promoters to dupe boxers. Let us all follow the rules. In our case, we will deposit money into the board’s account so that they should pay boxers. We don’t deal with boxers directly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chitenje said preparations for the fight were almost through.

“We have also secured support from Nyasa Capital Finance. This is also giving us a boost,” he said.
