Mphatso Nandolo, Nalicy Chirwa conquer Blantyre

Mphatso Nandolo and Nalicy Chirwa are this year’s winners of the Blantyre City Marathon in the men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively, after conquering the 42.195-kilometre road race Sunday.
Nadolo claimed the top prize after clocking 2:29:36 while seasoned athlete Kephas Kasteni won silver in 2:32:35. Jafalie Jossam came third in 2:34:37.
After winning bronze in last year’s competition, Chirwa recovered to triumph in 3:05:55. Doris Fisher was second in 3:16:31 to beat last year’s winner, Tereza Master, who finished third in 3:17:11.
Chirwa said she trained hard to win the race.
“I travelled from South Africa where I am based to compete for honours and I am happy to emerge winner against experienced athletes,” she said.
Director of Sports Jameson Ndalama, who was guest of honour, said he was pleased that the competition continues to register success.
“I am impressed with number of young people who took part in this race. This points to the fact that the competition is a success,” Ndalama said.
Some 53 athletes, 46 men and seven women, took part in this year’s competition.
Champions in both categories received K1 million each with runners-up getting K500,000 while the third-placed athletes went home with K250,000.
