Mphatso Philimon’s Silver gift

Silver Strikers’ resurgence continued Sunday with a 3-0 beating of Dwangwa United in a TNM Super League match at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

The Central Bankers started the season on a low after losing 2-1 to defending champions Be Forward Wanderers at their own backyard.

But in two consecutive games they have responded with anger having beaten Kamuzu Barracks and Dwangwa by 3-0 margins.

Mphatso Philimon was the hero Sunday when he hammered in a second half brace after Jack Chiona led the onslaught against his former club in the first half.

Dwangwa played entertaining football but lacked the cutting edge in the final third and were punished by Chiona 24 minutes into the match.

The two teams went for recess with Silver hanging on to a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Philimon scored a brace in quick succession after Dwangwa defenders were caught napping.

Dwangwa tried hard to reduce the deficit but it never came as Yinusa Sherif cleared off the line towards the end of the game.

Following the victory, Silver have moved up to position six with six points from three games and are just one point behind Nyasa Big Bullets and Wanderers.

The Bankers Team Manager, Francis Songo, said his charges were slowly gelling after a bad start to the season.

“We are on track now and the victories are giving us confidence that we might have a good season this year,” Songo said.

But Dwangwa Team Manager, Davie Mwandira, blamed the loss on his players’ lack of concentration.

“We conceded silly goals and it was not our day. But anyway, it is part of the game,” Mwandira said.

In other matches, Red Lions retained the top spot after a 2-2 draw against rookies TN Stars. Mathews Simbeye and Steve Ziba netted for the soldiers but China Chirwa and Stanley Davie also scored for the rookies for the two teams to share the spoils.

Lions have eight points from four games, just a point above second-placed Azam Tigers.

Moyale Barracks claimed their first victory of the season after beating Blue Eagles courtesy of Gastin Simkonda’s second half goal.

Kamuzu Barracks were also first time winners in the league this season with a 1-0 beating of Masters Security.
