Nanzikambe actor Mphundu Mjumira will next month leave for Germany where he will play the main character in a play titled Fear Eats the Soul.

The actor, who recently starred in a collaborative play The Prison Escape featuring Nanzikambe Arts, Mzuzu University Theatre Arts Group, Lions Theatre and actress Flora Suya, said yesterday that he was glad to be considered as the main actor in the production.

“This just shows that there is talent in Malawi and to be considered for the main role is no mean achievement. This will also give me a chance to show my skills to a different audience,” Mjumira said.

He said he will leave for Germany end November.

Mjumira said Theatre Konstanz which has been working in partnership with Nanzikambe Arts in several projects decided to put him in the cast having been impressed by his acting skills.

“I will be there for five months. This whole move is also as a result of the relationship that is there between Nanzikambe and Theatre Konstanz,” said the actor.

He said Fear Eats the Soul is a play that talks about the story of an immigrant who goes to Germany and falls in love with a woman there.

According to a synopsis of the play, Fear Eats the Soul is originally a movie that was written and directed by a famous German writer, director and theatre maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

The movie is said to have won a lot of international prizes and that since then it has been very popular on theatre stages.

This is a story of an accidental romance which is kindled between a 60- year old widowed cleaning woman and a migrant worker, who is 25-years younger.

They abruptly decide to marry, appalling everyone around them. What follows is a bitter and noxious reaction over their relationship, revealing every character in their lives.

According to the synopsis, this is a very strong and melodramatic theatre piece about the way conventional society detests anything and anybody unfamiliar but also about the hopes and limits of love.

The staging in Konstanz will be directed by Johanna Schall.
