MPs for police stations upgrade

Lilongwe-Mpenu Nkhoma Member of Parliament (MP), Collins Kajawa, has requested Homeland Security Ministry to upgrade Nkhoma Police Unit into a police post because population and economic activities are rising in the constituency.

Addressing Homeland Security Minister Nicholas Dausi in Parliament Tuesday, Kajawa said, in Nkhoma, there were several institutions including Nkhoma University, Nkhoma Hospital, Theological College, Nursing School and secondary schools; as such, the current police post is not adequate to cater for the growing needs of the area.

“Honourable Minister, there is need to upgrade Nkhoma Police Unit to a Police Post as there are a lot of economic activities happening in the area. There is also need to designate a motor vehicle and a motor cycle to enhance security management,” he said.

Dausi acknowledged the challenge, saying the ministry had plans to upgrade the police station.

“The upgrade will include an office structure and houses, among others. Once done, Mr First Deputy Speaker sir, some of the challenges raised by the honourable member would be rectified,” he said.

Rumphi East MP, Kamlepo Kalua, also asked the ministry to consider upgrading Chiweta Police Station, arguing that the station was in bad shape.

Dausi said he would consult on the matter.
