Mr Luc’s Library opens at Kapeni
Jacaranda Foundation Executive Director, Luc Deschamps, continues to promote reading culture in the country, the latest being the opening of his eighth library at Kapeni Primary School in Blantyre.
Deschamps has been opening libraries named after his first name – Mr Luc’s Library.
Deschamps said Monday he was happy to have opened yet another library as part of the Jacaranda Innovation Outreach programme of public and school libraries.
Deschamps said Jacaranda School for Orphans rehabilitated a vacant room at Kapeni Primary School, painted and decorated it and brought in shelves.
“Libraries are very important for offering knowledge and this is why I decided to open another library, at Kapeni. We have seen what books have done to children. Through this library, we want children to read and acquire knowledge,” Deschamps said.
He said the library was sponsored by two teachers from Shanghai American School in China namely Patrice Parks and Joshua Euten.
He added that some of the books that have been put in the library were donated by American teacher Kryn Olson and the non-governmental organisation Mary’s Meals.
Blantyre District Education Manager, Evelyn Njima, hailed Deschamps for opening Mr Luc’s Library at Kapeni Primary School, saying this is part of helping the government in promoting a reading culture.
Students at the school said the library would go a long way in helping them in their studies.
The opening of the school library was spiced up with several activities which included poems and songs.
The opening also saw the presence of gospel singer Princess Chitsulo and actor and filmmaker Tawonga Nkhonjera.
Students and teachers from IGS School in Hannover, Germany, and Silvia Hesse from Circle of Friends Hannover, also in Germany, were in attendance.
Mr Luc’s library has also opened at Chigumula Primary School, Misesa Primary School, HHI Primary School and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Pediatric Ward, among other places.
