Mr. Malawi lobbies for more funding

Newly-crowned national body-building champion, Brown Gondwe, has set himself an ambitious target of lobbying for more government funding by, among other things, making his Mr. Malawi office more visible during his reign.

The Mangochi-based Gondwe won the title after coming on top out of 35 other contestants during a contest held at Mkango Lodge in Blantyre last Saturday.

Speaking from his EMCEE Gym and Fitness Centre base, Gondwe described his winning as a sign of dedication and commitment.

He expressed sadness that Malawi prioritises other sporting activities that are not bringing desirable results on local and international level.

“If you look at other African countries such as Kenya and South Africa, you will see that they provide equal support to all sporting activities that is why you see them dominating on the minority sporting front unlike on football,” Gondwe said.

“If Malawi emulates that example we will soon start collecting medals on the international arena.”

Going forward, Gondwe said he will use his reign to engage in charity activities to increase the popularity of the sport, hoping for other stakeholders to capitalize on its popularity and support it in future.

“While appreciating the support we get from government through Malawi National Council of Sports, you will notice that we are not helped to prepare for national events just like our friends. Body-building is tough and needs a lot if one is to succeed,” Gondwe said.

“My predecessors were not doing enough to promote their office. I am planning to be more active and support children as well as inspiring them to work had in school, because for one to excel in everything, you need to have a very good education background.”
