Renowned Zambian actor Mutale Monde, better known as Mr Nguzu stars in Zambezi Magic show soapie Mpali, arrives in the country today ahead of the two-day inaugural Malawi Film Festival to be held at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe starting tomorrow through to Saturday.

Mr Nguzu is in the country courtesy of MultiChoice Malawi and, apart from being the guest at the festival driven by Film Association of Malawi (Fama), he is part of the judging panel for the film awards alongside Shemu Joyah.

“At MultiChoice, we really prioritise investing in the Malawian film and television industry to apply the efforts of organisations like Fama. We are proud to share this and we will be working with Fama to market this event, hence bringing in Mr Nguzu,” MultiChoice Malawi Corporate Affairs Manager Zena Makunje said yesterday.

Makunje said Mr Nguzu will be part and parcel of the activities taking place during the two-day festival and that they were looking forward to having him see all the incredible talent Malawian filmmakers have to offer.

Fama President Gift Sukez Sukali said recently that they received 32 entries which included 11 feature films, 19 short films and two documentaries.

He said after scrutiny, they selected 11 feature films and 13 short films. The 24 films have been nominated for the awards to be presented at the festival.

Joyah, whose award winning film The Road to Sunrise will screen during the official opening of the festival, hailed Fama for creating the podium.

“I am very impressed with this development. If we are to move forward and grow the industry then we need such platforms. Our friends are doing this in other countries. This festival will help expose local filmmakers and their films and also provide space for filmmakers and various players to network,” the veteran filmmaker said.

Joyah also said he was greatly honoured that Fama had selected his film to screen on the opening day of the festival running under the theme ‘Film Making For Social Economic Growth and Cultural Preservation’.
