Reigning Mr Zomba Bodybuilding champion, Thoko Kakhongwe, has been disqualified from taking part in this year’s championship due to ill discipline.
Kakhongwe reportedly insulted officials for allegedly promoting his rivals ahead of the contest set for December 26.
Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (WBAM Eastern Region chairperson, Bright Limani, said they do not tolerate indiscipline.
“We have been using the social media, including facebook, to promote the forthcoming contest. We have been posting pictures of different bodybuilders, including him as a way of marketing the event. This did not go down well with him because he wanted only his pictures to appear. He felt we were working against him,” he said.
Following the development, Kakhongwe allegedly insulted the organising committee.
“We, therefore, decided to bar him from contesting. We have been using the social media to promote the last two events in similar manner. We don’t take sides. Our mission is to develop the sport in Zomba and surrounding areas within the Eastern Region,” he said.
Kakhongwe said the issue was overblown and has asked for a disciplinary hearing.
“I regret my actions and I ask for forgiveness. Maybe I overreacted. I have asked the committee to forgive me. They made the decision in my absence,” he said.
Malawi Defence Force soldier, Emmanuel Binauli, was crowned Mr Zomba in 2013 when the tournament was revived while Kakhongwe finished second during that year.
Last year, Kakhongwe managed to depose Binauli.
