MRA launches tax info update drive
By Jameson Chauluka:

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has introduced a Tax Payer Information Update Drive which would enable tax payers to update their tax information ahead of the launch of its Msonkho Online.
The Msonkho Online, which is expected to be launched in 2020, is a fully fledged online transaction platform.
Among other information, tax -payers are required to submit email and physical addresses, phone numbers, bank account and mobile money account details.
MRA Director of Information and Communication Technology, Max Mlomba, said the information provided would be key upon launching Msonkho Online platform which will replace Mini ITAS system.
“Right now, tax-payers are able to pay their taxes online but are still required to come to MRA offices physically to present the files.
Advertisement“With Msonkho Online, they [tax payers] will be able to complete the transactions without coming to our offices at any point. We will also be able to send tax returns direct to their accounts; as you know, we stopped dealing with cheques,” Mlomba said.
He said the technology would help tax-payers save time and the authority in collecting more revenue, saying the taxation process will be made simple.
“We understand that most of the tax-payers are business people who are always busy. They will no longer have to leave their business to come to our offices.
“We are making taxation simple and expect that this will boost our collections,” Mlomba said.
