The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has said it has intensified preventive measures against Covid-19 at its border stations as well as all its offices across the country.
A visit to Mchinji border MRA offices last week revealed strict adherence to preventive measures such as hand-washing and social distancing.
MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma, confirmed the development, saying it crucial for the authority to ensure that the taxpayer is provided a conducive environment in the wake of Covid-19.
“The Authority is an essential service provider as it is responsible for collecting revenue for the Malawi government. The revenue is needed to enable the Government to fund the provision of development programmes and public services including mitigating short and long economic effects arising from the Covid-19 pandemic,” Kapoloma said.
He noted that, among others, MRA is encouraging online return filing and payment.
Kapoloma said besides filing manual tax returns at our offices, taxpayers are encouraged to use online services to submit tax returns during the lockdown.
He added that in addition to visiting their offices, taxpayer can have all their requests, inquiries and complaints addressed through online services.
According to Kapoloma, taxpayers seeking tax services from MRA including tax registration, Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC) and inquiries are being assisted through dedicated customer service representatives in all stations.
“To ensure rapid response to taxpayer queries, each Domestic Taxes Station has Senior Officers who taxpayers can contact by mobile phone, WhatsApp and email for different services. The contact information for each station is available on the MRA website and will be published in the newspapers,” he said.
