MTL installs optic fibre cable at Bingu National Stadium
Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) has fixed an eight-core optic fibre cable at the new Bingu National Stadium which will enable soccer lovers watch games on big screens within the stadium.
The modern facility, located in Lilongwe, is due for opening tomorrow at an event to be graced by President Peter Mutharika.
One of the features that make the venue conform to international standards are big screens that will enable sports lovers watch the action from different angles.
MTL Acting Chief Executive Officer Gladson Kuyeri said the fibre cable will also enable banks to be connected to the stadium and accommodate mobile networks.
“The fibre will also provide several services that sports lovers would want to access while watching games. For instance, people will be able to use internet with very good speed in the stadium,” Kuyeri said.
He said the cable will also make it easy for people to make calls on their mobile phones at the stadium.
Kuyeri said his company had acted swiftly after it was observed by various stakeholders during the Luso TV Bus Ipite Bonanza match on January 2 that making calls from the stadium was a challenge due to poor network.
“We have moved to make the stadium more user friendly. People should not be cut off just because they are at the stadium. The fibre cable will enable everyone to continue transacting while watching games at this modern stadium,” Kuyeri said.
Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Henry Mussa, who was the guest of honour at the launch of the cable on Wednesday, urged Malawians to be patriotic and take care of the facility.
“My wish is that this facility should be well looked after. I would like to appeal to those manning the stadium to engage with the technical staff from MTL to agree on how best to look after the facility,” he said.
There were concerns over security at the stadium during the construction phase with various building materials getting stolen.
The development forced government to set up a police unit at the stadium.
