Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) has embarked on open mic sessions to uplift arts on campus.
The open mic sessions are aimed at digging and exposing artistic works.
The first move in the project starts Friday.
Mubas Entertainment Director Michael Kwapata said they are excited to bring the open mic session.
Kwapata, better known as MQ the DJ, said, for a long time, it has been big names in the industry making headlines at events hence the university stepping in to dig its own names.
“Whenever we have events here, we always invite guest artists and yet we also have our own talents here. We want to build and make names here and conquer the industry,” Kwapata said.
He said the university has what it takes to excel in the arts and that what is needed is to create platforms that give people a chance to showcase their talents in different disciplines.
“This is just the beginning but we have more coming up. We have seen artists unearthed from open mics or talent shows standing out. We want to make names and let the country appreciate these names,” Kwapata said.
He said plans were at an advanced stage to introduce Mubas Talent Awards aimed at motivating students to show their best in arts.
“We, as a university, need an image in all sectors: education and also entertainment. With these shows, we are not only exposing students but also the world will get to recognise raw talent among students, which will also help in selling Mubas out there,” Kwapata said.
Some of the art disciplines to be showcased during the event include poetry, spoken word, stand-up comedy and music performances.
