Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) Central Chapter Chairperson Farai Chazima Soko has been suspended, The Daily Times has learnt.
According to a letter from the Central Region chapter which The Daily Times has accessed and has been copied to Mum president Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, Mum trustees and other chapters, it says Chazima Soko has been suspended because of her behaviour.
“The chapter has noted that in three consecutive times you have been to meetings you have failed to show up. The members have decided to suspend you from your responsibility until further consultation,” reads the letter.
It further says that the chapter has lost confidence in Chazima Soko and that it is now making consultation with the national executive committee for the way forward.
The letter has also asked Chazima Soko to return the treasury materials.
Chazima Soko, who is a gospel singer, confirmed receiving the letter but said she will continue to fight for fellow musicians even outside the chapter.
“I have actually been stopped from going to Mponela, Dowa for the national executive[meeting]. I am surprised because the letter which I received was written without following the necessary procedures. Actually, how can one be suspended without going for any hearing,” queried Chazima Soko.
Mhango also confirmed yesterday receiving the letter of suspension for Chazima Soko but he said he could not comment much since the national executive is meeting today at Mponela in Dowa where this issue is also expected to be discussed.
“I received a copy of the letter but I expect to get full details on the issue when we meet tomorrow (today) during the national executive meeting. The chapter says they have issues with her and they say they called her three times and she gave an apology but they feel she has not been cooperative,” said Reverend Mhango.
Asked why Chazima as a chairperson has been stopped from attending the meeting, Mhango said they thought it wise for her not to be part of it as she is currently on suspension with her chapter.
“We will have a discipline committee that will look into the issue and see if the suspension is genuine or not otherwise for now we need to hear her side,” said the Mum president.
However, some sources indicate that Chazima Soko has been suspended following her involvement with a separate group of artists which met recently and discussed several issues regarding the challenges facing Mum and Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) as well as the government’s failure to assist the creative industry.
“This is just a gimmick otherwise the issue sorrounds her involvement in the meetings some artists held recently in Lilongwe where they discussed several issues and one of them is that the Mum national executive has failed its duty and needs to be jacked up,” said the source.
On the national executive meeting which will bring together members from the chapters, two each, Mhango said there are several issues they will discuss and that they would want to find solutions.
“We will have reports from the chapters, again you may wish to know that there are a lot of issues which have been happening on the ground including the differences we have had as members and so we want to brainstorm and build one thing so that the union moves forward,” he said.
