Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) on Monday signed a five-year deal with a new company Malankie Music.Com at an event held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre.
Malankie Music.Com said the agreement will help in uplifting sales, marketing and distribution of music in the country.
“We researched and we found that musicians in Malawi are facing a number of challenges in terms of music sales and distribution and this is why we decided to partner the music body to assist,” the company’s managing director Malankie John Gondwe said.
With several musicians complaining that they are not benefiting from various online platforms in terms of making money, Gondwe described their website as unique.
“Other websites do not have the online facility. This online facility will give musicians a chance to make money,” he said.
He admitted that they were new on the market but was quick to point out that they have potential based on their four pillars of sales, marketing, promotion and distribution.
“We will be selling music to other outlets as well. We also have a music promotion player which gives an opportunity to artists to promote their work,” Gondwe said.
Mum President Gloria Manong’a said they decided to enter into this agreement having been impressed with Malankie Music.Com’s works despite being new on the market.
“Artists will surely benefit in terms of getting something and we went into this deal after making all the necessary consultations with Mum leadership,” Manong’a said.
She said following the agreement, Mum and Malankie will go on an awareness drive to sensitise musicians on how they can utilise the website.
Some of the artists, who were present during the signing of the agreement included old-timers Patrick Simakweli, Dave Phiri, Wallace Ngoma and Francis Chintembo.
