Music against Malaria Fest rebrands to Zakumudzi

FLASHBACK—Annemarie performs at Music against Malawi festival in 2019

Music against Malaria Festival led by musicians Code Sangala and Annemarie Quinn is this year rebranding to Zakumudzi Cultural Festival.

Both Code and Annemarie confirmed the development.

Annemarie, who is now based in United Kingdom, said Tuesday they were super excited to be launching Zakumudzi Cultural Festival.

“We have a pre-launch and art exhibition this year. Throughout Covid, it was challenging to raise funds for Music against Malaria as focus was shifted onto Covid,” Annemarie said.

She added: “We have used this as a lesson and now we want to be more creative and explore different ways to raise funds.

“We have partnered successfully with Art Malawi previously so, we thought it would be really exciting to work with them again to include different art forms in our aim to contribute to the health sector and whilst preserving Malawi’s cultural heritage”.

Annemarie said she has been sharing the story of Music against Malaria and recently performed at Buttermere Bash as well as ran choir workshops at Keswick School, which she indicated were given generous donations.

“It is amazing to have support for the healthcare in Malawi shown worldwide. These funds will go towards our 1000 nets campaign,” the singer said.

The pre-launch and art exhibition will be held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre on September 2 2022 ahead of the main festival next year.

Apart from Code, some of the acts billed to perform at the pre-launch include Lulu, Madalitso Band, Waliko Makhala and Chichiri Cultural Heritage.

“We would want to further enhance traditional music to spearhead our malaria intervention,” Code said.

He said Zakumudzi Cultural Festival has partnered with Art Malawi, who will get selected painters to do portraits to pay homage to some of the country’s legendary artists including Daniel Kachamba, Allan Namoko, MBC Band, Tambala Chitenje, Lucky Stars, Kennedy Ndoya (Madolo) and Stonald Lungu.
