Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) will hold elections for the National Executive Committee (Nec) in December this year.

Mum Board Chairperson Wycliffe Chimwendo confirmed Monday of the elections which he said was one of the agendas for the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

“The AGM is not just for elections as may have been perceived but it is a general meeting for discussions and decision making for key strategic activities in our industry,” Chimwendo, a renowned gospel musician, said.

He said they will announce the other details later.

“This means a lot as an issue of progress. Those in office are free to seek a fresh mandate at the same time if need be, the members may also usher in fresh minds to lead the union. We will soon announce details and a window for those interested to vie for any position,” Chimwendo said.

He said the development also shows that Mum is a democratic union and that it values the contributions of the members in matters that concern them especially for deciding who should lead them.

Some artists have already started marketing themselves for positions to seek election in December.

Mum is currently being headed by Gloria Manong’a, who has since indicated that she will seek re-election.

Manong’a could not be drawn to say much on the issue saying the trustees are the ones who will announce the details.

Manong’a took over the leadership mantle from Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, who resigned.
