Music bonanza to kick-start Chanco Scholarship fundraiser
University of Malawi – Chancellor College (Chanco) Scholarship Fund in collaboration with Department of Fine and Performing Arts has organised a concert dubbed Grand Music Bonanza that will bring performances from among others Lawi, Faith Mussa and veteran Patrick Simakweli.
The concert will take place on Saturday at the Great Hall in Zomba.
With several needy students at the university requiring financial support, a concerned team of academics from the Department of Fine and Performing Arts sat down to explore ways of raising funds to support some of these students.
Using art as a base, they came up with the proposed name of Art for Change Scholarship Fund with the intention of the fund to assist as many students as possible primarily from the Faculty of Humanities.
According to available information, the fund will initially target 10 students per year belonging to Faculty of humanities at Chancellor College.
In order to raise funds for the fund, the team has outlined various fundraising ways among them music concerts and art exhibitions.
Music lecturer in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Alinane Mphande said music concerts form the initial and major fundraising activities of the Scholarship Fund.
She said renowned Malawian music artists will provide entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere and that the Grand Music Bonanza this Saturday was one of them.
Malala real name James Kuchilala, who studied music at Chancellor College, said recently that he was excited to perform at the event which is aimed at raising funds for needy students.
The artist last week also revealed that he was starting a music education project aimed at teaching youths the basics of music.
Simakweli, who is a former Musicians Union of Malawi –Southern Chapter president also said he was happy to be part of this concert and that he was looking forward to sharing the stage with other artists.
Some of the members that make up the Art for Change Scholarship Fund are Head of Music Section Andrew Faria, Mike Chilemba from the Fine Art Section, Mphande and Dr Grant Nthala.
