Musician Dr Drew to drop debut EP

Blantyre-based musician Dr Drew, real name Andrew Mijoya, is set to give people a treat with his debut Extended Playlist (EP) titled Love.

The musician, who rebranded last year from Drew to Dr Drew, said Wednesday that the EP was a celebration of love and that it covers A gape (The God kind of love) and Eros (romantic love).

“This is an EP which is coming after a lot of hard work and I am happy that finally it’s done. I worked with three producers in this EP, one is based in Lilongwe and another in Blantyre,” he said.

Obed Kananji of Groove Factory in Lilongwe produced two tracks from the EP namely ‘Ndiganiza za Iwe’ and ‘Ndimakukonda’ which were recorded at Phantom by Blessings Hollah.

Blantyre-based producer AB Malinga of Melodix Studio also produced two songs namely ‘My Everything’ and ‘Original’.

“I have deliberately released the EP this period because we are in the month of February when we value love, especially with Valentine,” he said.

Dr Drew said he has collaborated with Niekay in the track ‘Chikondi’, gospel rapper Regenerate in the song ‘Original’ and Tamanda Mgala in the song ‘My Everything’.

“I took time to explore different styles in this project. Two tracks have all instruments recorded live and the other three have a combination of live and digital instruments. I have also included rap in one of the tracks, which means that there is something for every listener out there,” he said.

Dr Drew said most of the recordings of the songs in the EP were done last year, with one track recorded this year.

“We are going through difficult times as a country, but we can still take time to celebrate those we love and to receive love. It therefore feels great that I can help light up the mood for my fans in these difficult times with this Love EP,” Dr Drew said.

He said he has also made it possible that people should access the album via digital platforms.

“It’s been an exciting time for me working on this EP, especially that it is all about love and I would like to call upon people to appreciate the songs and be inspired,” Dr Drew said.
