CHARLES Musowa and Doris Fisher rose to the occasion to triumph in the 2017 Mount Mulanje Porters’ Race at Likhubula Forestry Office in Mulanje District yesterday.

The result was especially remarkable for Fisher who won gold in the ladies’ category for the fourth consecutive year having conquered the 23 km distance in 2:47:13. She was trailed by Pilirani William who hit the finishing line 11 minutes later, with Violet Joza coming third in 3:02:14.

In the men’s category, Musowa was first to the finishing line in 2:08:36 while Evance Nyazule came second after clocking 2:12:06. Boniface Pangani settled for bronze with a third place finish in 2:12:33.

Musowa said he was excited to have taken over the crown from last year’s winner, Leo Chikhwaza, and described the race as tough because of the weather.

“We usually run in chilly weather but today we had a sunny day. This made life tough for us as it was a bit hotter,” Musowa said.

Fisher was left scratching her head after failing to equal the record she set last year by 7 minutes but promised to do much better next year. TNM joined the list of companies and organisations that bankrolled the event, and the mobile phone service provider’s Senior Manager (Business Services), Limbani Nsapato, could not hide his excitement with what was on offer.

“We came in to support the competition with K5 million and it has been worth it. As a Malawian company, we wanted to play a part in conserving natural resources on Mulanje Mountain through coming to this year’s Mount Mulanje Porters Race,” Nsapato said.

Guest of honour, Ministry of Tourism’s Director of Tourism, Isaac Katopola, congratulated the participants and organizers for keeping the event alive for more than 20 years and said government values its contribution to the development of tourism in the country.

Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust have been in the forefront of organizing the annual event, with other organisations like Malawi Gaming Board, Catering Solutions and Mbaula Network also supporting this year’s competition.
