Must hosts Umssa games

University of Malawi (Unima) staff would take a day off to compete in several sports disciplines during University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (Umssa) annual inter-college games at Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) in Thyolo on Saturday.

The games bring together staff members from all Unima constituent colleges, Lilongwe University of Agriculture, Natural Resources (Luanar) and Must.

According to Umssa General Secretary, Herbert Mpando, the participants would compete in several sports disciplines, including football, athletics, netball and volleyball.

“Our objectives are to promote sports recreation, healthy lifestyles and culture development for staff in their respective colleges and universities. In addition, the games are aimed at fostering existing relationships among members of the institutions and encouraging sports at all levels. Such relationships, created through participation in sports, have significant potential of building bridges among these universities in academic and research endeavors,” he said.

Mpando added that the games were also crucial because they provide a platform for preparations ahead of Southern Africa Universities Staff Sports Association (Saussa) Games held in Southern Africa annually.

“This weekend’s games will help us prepare for the Saussa Games that will take place at the University of Swaziland. We will have an opportunity to select the best talent to represent the country in Swaziland. We want to do better than last year in Lesotho,” Mpando said.

At the end of the games on Saturday, there would be a cultural evening where the institutions would showcase traditional dances.
