Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) has revealed plans to construct a shopping mall and an industrial park as part of its expansion drive.

Must Vice-Chancellor, Address Malata, made the revelation Tuesday on the sidelines of performances by a Chinese Cultural Troupe as part of the 2020 Chinese New Year celebrations.

Malata said the university needs other buildings, including a shopping mall and industrial park as part of its growth.

“The university, as you can see, has infrastructure but this infrastructure is the first part. The university needs to move forward. We need other buildings, we don’t have for, instance, staff houses and this is one of the initiatives that we want to see happen. We want staff to stay here on campus, if they stay here then they can also spend more time with students,” she said.

Malata added: “If the staff have to stay here then there has to be a shopping mall and I can say that there is already a foundation for a full mall and we are looking for partners, who can help us put out that mall so that people can actually come from Blantyre and other places to shop at Must”.

She added the production initiative will also give opportunities to their students to practice and bridge theory with practical.

“This is the model that is used in many of these countries including China,” she said.
