Mwase to proceed with court case

Fired Malawi National Football Team Coach Meck Mwase Mwase has turned down National Football Coaches Association (NHCA) proposal to sort out his concerns with Football Association of Malawi (Fam) through contact and dialogue rather than the court.

Mwase, through Makiyi, Kanyenda and Associates, is demanding full withdrawal of Fam’s media statement, unconditional apology and his restoration as head coach for the Flames or alternatively, payment for the full wages, salaries and all benefits for the remainder of his contract.

According to Makiyi, Kanyenda and Associates, Mwase is owed K500,000 million.

In an interview, Kanyenda insisted they will proceed with the court case as directed by their client.

“The case at hand involves Fam and not them [NFCA]. We gave Fam 48 hours to respond to our concerns but they remained silent. We are proceeding with the case and our stand is still the same. We want them to pay the coach all the damages for unfair dismissal. The amount is pegged at K500 million but it may go up,” he said.

Kanyenda said redeploying Mwase to Malawi Under-23 National team was equally a mere joke.

Earlier on, NFCA Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni said they wanted the case to be settled outside the court as it was not good for the game.

“We are concerned about the matter as it not reflecting well. Coaches suing the mother body who are our parent is not own. Our major concern is that when these issues end up in court, the career of the coaches involved is affected,” he said before pointing out two coaches who dragged Fam to the court.

Mwase has a running contract with the government until September 2023.

His performance during the Qatar World Cup qualifiers was disastrous as the Flames lost five matches and won once out of six matches.

Mwase, who is the third local coach to inspire the Flames to Africa Cup of Nations finals, worked under Romanian Mario Marian Marinica in Cameroon.

Marinica led the Flames to their first-ever Round of 16 finish at the continental showpiece.
