Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda has commended stakeholders for their respective roles in supporting the Malawi National Netball Team’s 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign in Birmingham, England.

The Queens finished seventh at the competition after a 62-56 victory over Wales on Friday.

This was Malawi’s worst finish at the Commonwealth Games after fifth place finishes in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments.

In 2018, Malawi defeated New Zealand but narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot after losing to Uganda by a two-goal margin.

Mwawi described her fourth appearance at the Games as a great experience.

“It has been a great experience sharing this platform with all distinguished athletes from our beautiful land of Malawi. Together, we showed incredible effort despite the fact that we did not get the results we all anticipated.

“However, the footprint we have left here does not end here, but compels us to work even harder. We carry great pride in representing our motherland’s flag and will continue to aim for greater victories,” she said.

Mwawi said stakeholders’ support to the Queens was incredible.

“Many thanks to FDH Bank plc for the huge support, Malawi Government, Our Queens Our Pride and all netball fans for such incredible support. We were also accompanied by incredible staff and officials, who played a very important role behind the scenes. Thank you to everyone for your continuous support,” she said.

Mwawi’s Australia Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens also acknowledged her important role in the Queens’ setup.

“MJ [Mwawi Jacinta] has long been a stalwart of the Queens’ attacking end, credit to her accuracy, high volume and impressive athleticism,” reads a report on Vixens’ website.

Another report on netballscoop.com describes Mwawi as the star of the team that shot Malawi to their first ever victory over New Zealand in the 2018 Commonwealth Games
