At 9,671 votes as of Firday, the New Zealand-based shooter had further widened the gap between herself and the nearest contenders, Dmitry and Olga Kulikova of Russia, who had 3,888.
The German Flying Disc Ultimate Mixed team comes third with 2,704, followed by Regina Jacques of the United States at 1,292 votes.
Mwawi was nominated for the award because of her outstanding performance at last year’s World Netball Cup in New Zealand where her 321 goals in eight matches, converted to a 91 percent success rate, earned her the award of Player-of-the- Tournament award.
Voting continues until January 31. Mwawi herself has taken to Facebook to appeal for more votes.
Mwawi is swimming in glory, being the only African on the 18-member short-list of outstanding athletes seeking the votes.
The winner will be announced on February 1. The former Escom Sisters shooter recently won MBC award and has also clinched a six-month deal as Airtel Malawi Limited brand ambassador.
