Mwawi Kumwenda in camp
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has finally swallowed its pride after accepting to meet Mwawi Kumwenda’s representative to enable the star-shooter to join the Queens’ squad bound for England.
Mwawi’s participation in three test series against England, at the end of this month, was in doubt after the shooter’s advisor and legal representative, Hlupikire Chalamba, asked for a round-table discussion to iron out issues that led to the player’s expulsion from the Queens camp during preparation for the disastrous Fast5 Netball World Series in Australia.
Chalamba yesterday confirmed that the shooter was returning to the Queens’ set-up following Nam’s promise to resolve the issue.
“The Nam President [Khungekile Matiya] has reached out to me and has accepted my request for a meeting. In the meantime, she has indicated that Nam will ensure a conducive environment for Mwawi and her team-mates.
“Thus, while we plan to hold further discussions with Nam in order to iron out the differences that ensued, Nam has also requested that Mwawi be released for camp. Since the concerns we raised were done in good faith, I will release Mwawi to join her team-mates in camp. I remain optimistic that the discussions we plan to hold with Nam will be fruitful,” Chalamba said.
Matiya and Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, did not pick our calls for us to get their comments.
The test series in England would be used for International Netball Federation rankings hence, the Queens risk losing their sixth position if they lose again.
