Mwawi Kumwenda inspires Vixens to grand final

Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda inspired her Australia Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens to the league’s grand final with a 55-54 win over Giants Netball on Saturday.

Kumwenda continued with her impressive form, scoring 36 goals from 37 shots.

Vixens’ reward for sailing through the preliminary round is a showdown against West Coast Fever at RAC Arena in Perth on July 3.

Kumwenda’s side was down by as much as 10 goals in the last quarter and relied on a magical performance from Emily Mannix magic in the dying moments to get over the line and secure the spot.

Vixens’ website reports that Kumwenda maintained pressure in attack to combat the physicality of April Brandley and Tilly McDonell, helping her team creep out to a handy eight goal lead heading into quarter time.

“Kumwenda opened our account in the second half before a huge intercept from Eddy saw us level the scores,” the report reads.

The league’s website reports that Kumwenda played a great role in helping Vixens secure the ticket to the final.

“With scores level in the final minute, Vixens goaler Mwai Kumwenda appeared to hand the Giants a golden opportunity to claim victory following a costly turnover. But Emily Mannix came through with a match-saving intercept and Kumwenda made amends with the deciding goal in the dying seconds.

“With Diamonds attacker Kiera Austin missing out on the do-or-die clash against her former club due to health and safety protocols, Kumwenda and Rahni Samason helped guide the Vixens to an eight-point lead after one quarter,” the report reads.

Another online publication reported that Kumwenda’s relentless accuracy ensured the Vixens’ extraordinary comeback.

Vixens head coach Simone McKinnis said she was thrilled with the win, particularly the spirit the players showed in the final moments of the crunching tie.

“I’m just over the moon, as you could see after the game what it meant to the girls. It was just a fantastic finish to that game. To be playing in a grand final, we’re just beside ourselves,” McKinnis said.
