Malawi national netball team has been dealt a blow after it emerged that two top shooters Australia-based Mwawi Kumwenda and England-based Joyce Mvula will not take part in the Test Series against South Africa’s Spar Proteas this month end.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) released a squad for the upcoming three test matches Sunday and the association’s general secretary Carol Bapu said the highly rated shooters will miss the games due to various reasons.

“Mwai Kumwenda; her club cleared her but she excused herself as she said she is on holiday while Joyce Mvula is not participating because of club commitments,” Bapu said in a statement Sunday.

In an interview Sunday from Melbourne, Kumwenda confirmed her unavailability.

“Unfortunately, I will not be available for the series as I am still going through physiotherapy to attain pre injury 100 percent while on holiday here in Melbourne. I am available for any future engagements. I wish the team and the technical crew all the best during these three games,” she said.

Mvula was not readily available yesterday.

Kumwenda had a wonderful season in Australia as she inspired her side to win Suncorp Super Netball championship and was also voted as Nissan Player of the Match. On the part of Mvula, she is also a top shooter but was inactive for her side in the United Kingdom due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Malawi Queens and Proteas last met at the 2019 Africa Netball Championship in October last year as South Africa won on their way to be crowned champions.

Queens Coach Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa has blended the squad with experience and young players. Maggie Sikwese, Beauty Basiyao, Tendai Masamba, Juliet Sambo and Mary Nyirenda have made it into the squad.

The Queens are expected to fly out of the country this morning through Chileka International Airport for the games which will take place from November 26 to 30 in Rustenburg, South Africa.

SPAR Proteas head coach Dorette Badenhorst has included all the top players in the squad ahead of the games.

“As a team, we have been challenged by a difficult year riddled with Covid-19. We are thankful for the opportunity to play an international game this year,” Badenhorst told Sky Sports.

“Playing against any African country is never easy, but this will be a great challenge for the players, and we are looking forward to building the team.”
