Mwawi Kumwenda, Joyce Mvula shine again

The country’s netball exports, Mwawi Kumwenda and Joyce Mvula, were instrumental in helping their clubs collect full points over the weekend in Australia and England, respectively.

Mwawi, who features for Melbourne Vixens, played a crucial role in her club’s 66-50 triumph over second-placed Queensland Firebirds on Saturday night.

The Malawi Queens top shooter converted 41 out of 43 attempts.

According to Melbournevixens.com.au, Firebirds struggled from the opening few minutes, with the Vixens’ defence rattling their usually formidable attacking line.

The lead stretched out to five goals early before the game tightened heading towards the first break.

Firebirds reduced the margin to just two goals with two minutes left.

However, a late rally from the Vixens saw them score four unanswered goals to lead by six at quarter-time, 17 – 11.

Both teams were guilty of turning the ball over throughout the second quarter, but it would be the Vixens who would increase their lead, scoring six goals in a row to lead 33-23 at the main break.

The Vixens continued their impressive ball movement in the second-half, extending their lead to 52 – 33 with a 19-to-10- goal third quarter.

In England, Mvula had a strong first-half when her English team, Manchester Thunder, humbled Celtic Dragons 62-53.

Mvula was re-introduced midway through the third quarter when the game was at 36-apiece.

The change made an instant difference as the Malawian brought the much-needed composure.

Thunder powered to an unassailable 10-goal lead with five minutes to go and the game petered out, with the Black and Yellows taking their second win of the season.
