Malawi netball star, Mwawi Kumwenda, has missed out on a nomination for the International World Games Association (IWGA) Athlete of-the Year Award.

Mwawi has not been nominated despite leading the Queens to a first-ever third place finish at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series.

The shooter won the accolade last year with a huge lead, topping the poll with 17,910 votes from sports lovers across the world.

The Flying Disc Beach Ultimate Mixed Team from Germany was ranked second with 9,168 votes.

The Australia-based Mwawi was nominated for last year’s award after being voted as Player of-the Tournament for the Netball World Cup held in Australia.

Her win at the World Cup was backed by impressive statistics of 91 percent shots on target and 321 goals in eight games. She was the only player to score over 300 goals.

But this year, Mwawi is not among the 16 shortlisted candidates from which World Games’ fans can choose their favorite online.

The shortlist comprises candidates nominated by their international federations with sports on the programme of The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland.

The first round of voting will close on January 15 with the final round commencing a day later. The winner will be announced on February 1.

It is the fourth time that the IWGA has staged a vote for the award.

“It is a kind of tradition starting a new year celebrating the achievements of our outstanding athletes. This time, we are not only looking back to successes in the past,” explained IWGA President José Perurena in a statement.

“We also look forward to our event in Poland. Most of our candidates on the shortlist will compete in The World Games from July 20 to 30, too.”

With the next Netball World Cup set for Liverpool, England, in 2019, the game’s mother body, International Netball Federation (INF), cannot nominate any player for the annual award.

INF nominates players based on performance at the world tournament.
