Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda has chosen to focus on the positive side after her Australia Suncorp Super Netball League team Melbourne Vixens went down 70-59 to West Coast Fever in Monday’s grand final.
Kumwenda was one of the final’s biggest stars after inspiring Vixens in a 55-54 preliminary final win over Giants Netball about a week ago.
Monday’s final drew a record 13,908 adoring fans at RAC Arena, with Fever’s star goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler nailing 58 goals from 59 attempts in a match-winning display.
It was sweet revenge for Fever, who lost 66-64 to Vixens in an epic 2020 grand final.
Kumwenda said she remains proud of the team despite the loss.
“Not the end we anticipated in the grand final but so proud of the team this year. We are the minor premiers in the 2022 season. But finishing top of the table from bottom last season is something that is remarkable.
“So this is something for which to keep our heads high. We hope to come back stronger next season,” she said.
The win is Fever’s first in a grand final and has broken Western Australia’s 25-year title drought.
