Mwawi Kumwenda steps up training

New Zealand-based professional netballer, Mwawi Kumwenda, overcame her disappointment over failure to feature for her former team, Kukoma Diamonds, by designing an individual training programme.

Mwawi and Diamonds were frustrated after Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) refused to allow the shooter to feature in the GOtv Netball Champions League on the grounds that the proposed loan deal from Tactix of New Zealand was outside the transfer window.

During the week, the Tactix player said she moved on after the incident.

“I wanted to play for Diamonds to keep fit. When the loan deal did not work, I decided to train on my own. I was going to the gym and I had sessions at Kamuzu Stadium. At times, I was also training with Diamonds to improve my ball-work,” she said.

Mwawi hinted that she would likely return to New Zealand on January 10.

Despite uncertainty surrounding her involvement with Malawi Queens, Mwawi returned to the national netball team and was named the best player for 2015 Netball World Cup in New Zealand.

Locally, she was also recognised by MBC following her achievements.
