Malawi National Netball Team icon Mwawi Kumwenda has emerged top on the list of players who were outstanding for Australia’s Suncorp Netball League side Melbourne Vixens in the just-ended season.

Kumwenda has surpassed her Vixens teammates after amassing 16 votes while Kadie-Ann Dehaney is second with 12.

Influential netball website netballscoop.com conducted a vote for best players in each team at the end of the season.

“Mwai Kumwenda came out on top of an even field. She held the team together in a poor season for the defending champions with only two wins. Our voting system this season entailed voting for the best five players in each game on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis,” the website’s report reads.

Meanwhile, the former Kukoma Diamonds star shooter has finished among the top five in two statistics categories of super shots and total points.

In the super shots category, she is third with 40 points, seven behind winner Jo Harten of Giants Netball.

Kumwenda has finished fifth in the total points category with 500 against winner Jhaniele Fowler who plies her trade with West Coast Fever.

Vixens had a season to forget after finishing bottom of the table with eight points from 14 matches in a league contest that Giants Netball won after amassing 36 points.

Kumwenda attributed the poor performance to several factors that hampered their progress.

“We were building a new team and most players took responsibility from those who retired last season. Some of our key players also struggled with injuries throughout the season.

“So it is hard when you are playing a professional competition with lots of challenges. But we have learnt a lot from the season and we hope to come back strong. It is painful to finish last on the ladder after winning the title last season,” she said.

Kumwenda said she was happy with her individual performance despite failing to inspire her team to success.

“Personally, I think I played well this season based on statistics. I love winning and finishing last is not good the a team. But we are coming back strong next season to reclaim the championship,” she said.
