Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda maintained her excellent form under the post as Australia Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens claimed a stylish second win in four days with a clinical performance against West Coast Fever Tuesday.
The 70-64 victory saw Vixens cruise to the top of the ladder with 32 points from 10 matches.
Fever are second with 28 points from the same number of matches.
Kumwenda reigned supreme in the game once more, slotting in 45 goals from 46 attempts after converting all her 50 tries in Vixens’ 66-63 win over Giants Netball on Saturday.
The league’s website reported that the former Kukoma Diamonds superstar was in the spotlight as she engaged Fever captain Courtney Bruce in a telling match-up.
“Kumwenda’s cunning and poise had to be inside Bruce’s head when the Fever defender bickered over the return of the ball to the Vixen in the closing minutes. The battle between Kumwenda and Bruce intensified as the match wore on.
“Bruce’s strength troubled Kumwenda, who was unable to use her aerial prowess to control the shooting circle. Bruce grabbed five gains but Kumwenda had the last laugh,” supernetball.com.au reports.
Kumwenda said she was excited with her team’s success.
“We just want to continue winning games and I am playing my part as a goal shooter in helping my team collect more points. We are having an exciting season and we are taking each game as it comes,” she said.
Vixens Coach Simone McKinnis told melbournevixens.com.au that she was more than impressed with her side’s efforts to seal the deal against a tough opponent on the road.
“We came over here determined to win the game. It’s one of the toughest road trips and we’re doing it in the middle of a condensed season. So to show how tough we are as a team and to get the job done was really pleasing.
“I loved our start. I loved our ball movement and the crispness and speed of ball movement we brought. Defensively the pressure and just having a go at the ball, I just loved that,” she was quoted as saying.
Vixens’ next match is against NSW Swifts on Saturday.
