Malawian netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda’s Australia Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens returned to winning ways with a 53-47 win over Adelaide Thunderbirds on Saturday.

The win took Vixens back to the top of the table with 20 points from six matches.

Vixens registered a 71-58 loss to Sunshine Coast Lightning last week, their first of the season.

However, West Coast Fever, who have 16 points from five games, could return to the summit as they were taking on Giants Netball Sunday.

Fever and Vixens have lost a game each and are in a neck-and-neck fight for the title

Vixens were spurred on a noisy home crowd to register their fifth win of the season.

The opening quarter was tight with both sides trying to impose themselves on the contest but it ended in a 12-12 stalemate.

Vixens upped the tempo of their game in the second quarter to prevail 15-12 at half time.

Thunderbirds came back into the game to win the third quarter 12-10 but their efforts were in vain as Vixens triumphed 15-11 in the last quarter to register the sweet victory.

Kumwenda was one of the outstanding performers in the match, having converted 37 times from 41 attempts.

She said it was exciting to return to winning ways after last weekend’s disappointment.

“It was a great game and I am happy for the win. We are now looking forward to the next game, which we must also win,” Kumwenda said.

Vixens’ next game is against Magpies on May 1.
