Mwezi Arts to host South African comedian

By Getrude Mkandawire:

South African comedian, Mark Sampson, is set to perform in the country courtesy of Mwezi Arts.

The comedy spree will take place at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe.

Sampson is expected to hold three performances, with the first one on March 9 and two performances on March 23.

Sampson incorporates climate activism with comedy.

Another Indian-born South African comedian, actor and doctor of Indian- Malay descent, Riyaad Moosa, is also set to perform in the country on March 30 2019 courtesy of Kweza Arts driven by poet Q Malewezi.

Mwezi Arts Administrator, Hazel Musochera, said the decision to bring Sampson came after positive reviews on his previous shows and tours across the continent.

“It was not only the idea of comedy as a remedy but grabbing a unique opportunity to present an authentic and celebrated artist in Malawi,” Musochera said.

Sampson and his family are now on their homeward bound leg back to South Africa from their Africa Clockwise tour where they managed to tour 35 countries in their green truck that runs on vegetable oil and recycled waste.

“Not only is he a comedian but he also draws attention on issues of climate change affecting the continent. Mark and his family are the first people to cross the African continent without using fossil fuels,” Musochera said.

Sampson is a founder of the Cape Comedy Collective and mentored famous South African comedians such as Kagiso Gola, Moosa and Kurt Schoonraad.
