My boys have matured-Peter Mponda

Fisd Wizards technical director, Peter Mponda, has said his young lads have matured over time after enduring a torrid debut season in the Super League where they are currently battling relegation.

Wizards have only managed four wins in 24 League matches.

They have drawn nine times, lost 11 times while scoring 23 goals and conceding 29.

Despite beating fellow relegation strugglers Dedza Young Soccer 3-0 on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium, Wizards remain rooted at the bottom of the standings with 21 points.

Mike Mkwate scored a brace while Godfrey Masonda added another in the match.

Wizards have to get at least nine points from their remaining available 12 points in order to have any chances of survival.

With Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers among their remaining opponents, Mponda remains optimistic they could conjure a ‘great escape’.

He said his charges have shown signs of maturity especially in the second round.

“I have always said that experience comes with game time. People were saying that we don’t have experience, but I said that if we don’t give the players game time, where are they going to get experience? We believed in the players and their quality and now they are showing signs of maturity,” he said.

“People have been writing us off that we are out of the League. The players have been playing under pressure a lot because we had to prove that we are good by winning matches. I am happy that the players handled the pressure well on Saturday and they did well.”

On his part, Dedza Young Soccer coach Milias Pofera said he had belief in his side’s ability to survive in the League.

Dedza are currently tied at 26 points with Mzuni following the latter’s 2-1 victory over Airborne Rangers on Saturday.

“The battle is still on. We have to work hard as a team and we have to plan well for the remaining games to win as many matches as possible,” he said.

On whether his side was complacent following a good run recently, Pofera said: “We cannot get carried away. How many games have we won? This is a League where every point matters therefore we have to work hard so that we should not finish at the bottom of the table.”

Before yesterday’s round of matches, Airborne were 13th with 25 points from 25 matches while Epac were 14th with 22 points from 23 matches.
