President Lazarus Chakwera has warned those that threaten critics of his administration to stop doing so, stressing that his government is open to criticism.
Chakwera made the sentiments in Lilongwe Sunday when he attended a church service at Nkhoma Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP).
He said the Tonse administration is open to criticism from individuals and institutions for the betterment of the country.
“My administration is for everyone in this nation, therefore, we shall continue to receive directions, correction and criticism. Today I am here because of Nkhoma Synods’ contribution to the country, especially in the health and education sectors.
“My visit symbolises a good relationship between government and Nkhoma Synod. So this government will continue working together with the synod and other religions,” Chakwera said.
Nkhoma Synod Moderator Reverend Philip Kambulire said government’s failure to function properly is the failure for the church too.
“For the government to function properly, it is good to be open to criticism, suggestions and corrections which the President says is ready to hear,” Kambulire said.
Chakwera is the fourth president to have prayed with the Nkhoma Synod since the country got independence.
Chakwera attended prayers at Nkhoma CCAP barely a week after the synod released a pastoral letter that criticised his administration, charging that the fight against corruption was lost.
The church leaders also accused the Tonse Alliance-led administration of failing to fulfill promises made ahead of the June 23 2020 presidential election.
