Mysterious fire kills granny

Late Chavula will be laid to rest this afternoon

A 70-year-old man, Wiseman Chavula, died in a mysterious fire that ravaged his grass-thatched home at Rafiki area, in Mzuzu City last night.

Both the police and the deceased family said they have not established the cause of the fire.

David Kapesa, who stays 50 metres away from the deceased’s home, said he just noticed the fire Monday morning.

“Somebody awakened me this morning only to be shown the burnt house. I rushed to the house and that is when I noticed that Mr. Chavula had been completely burnt,” Kapesa said.

However, sharp artefacts including two panga knives were found on Chavula’s corpse.

Group Village Headman Ephraim Chione said people were surprised by the sharp objects that were seen on the corpse.

“This man was just staying alone and we have never been involved in a misunderstanding with anybody.

“We feel he has been murdered and torching his house was just to trying to compromise some crew that may lead to arrests,” Chione said.

Mzuzu Police Public Relations officer Paul Tembo said the police are conducting investigations on the matter.

“We are waiting for the report from the Fire Department and post-mortem results which will help us understand the cause of the fire,” Chapola said.
