Mzimba Heritage Association (Mziha), a grouping of Zwangendaba Ngonis who originate from Mzimba District, on Saturday elected executive committee members to run affairs of the organisation for the next four years.
During the elections, Mzondi Moyo was elected chairperson, after defeating closest challenger Ndabazake Thole.
Moyo, who is a retired educationist, has replaced Reverend Overton Mazunda.
Kingsley Jere was voted in as general secretary while Bartholomew Shaba is the association’s treasurer general.
Speaking after the indaba, Moyo (chairperson) said he will ensure that a Ngoni culture museum is built so that tourists are able to learn the history of the Ngoni of Mzimba.
“I also want our youths to learn the Ngoni language and cultural values,” Moyo said.
In his remarks, Inkosi Jalavikuba, who represented Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V at the meeting, advised committee members to “promote coordination” among Mzimba Ngonis who stay in various districts across the country.
The inkosi also called for accountability and transparency in the management of the body.
As one way of showcasing Ngoni cultural values, the heritage association holds Umthetho Cultural Festival annually at the historical Hora Mountain.
The new committee will start executing its duties after M’mbelwa Chiefs’ Council approves it.
