Mzimba to benefit from public works programme

The Local Development Fund (LDF), under the Malawi Social Action Fund 4, has donated K203 million to M’mbelwa District Council to undertake public works programme.

The programme was expected to benefit 16,983 people in the district.

The funds, sourced from World Bank, would support projects like environment management, maintenance of schools, rehabilitation of feeder roads and re-afforestation, among others.

Meanwhile, the council chairperson, Dan Nkosi, emphasized on the need of accountability as the money was meant to help uplift the people’s living standards.

“When implementing this programme, we must always bear in mind that above everything else it is a social protection meant to uplift the lives of the poor,” said Nkosi.

He further encouraged councillors to work together with ward development chairpersons and local leaders in implementing the programme.

At each constituency level, the programme would benefit 1,544 people who will be pocketing K600 a day after working for four hours for 12 days.
