Mzuni FC insist not broke

Mzuni FC have defended their recent call for the corporate world’s financial support, saying the move does not mean that the team is broke.

Mzuni have invited well-wishers to assist the team financially, fuelling speculation that the team was facing financial hiccups.

An inside source said the team might struggle to fund its travelling costs next season.

The source added that the team’s current funding is insufficient.

Mzuni’s General Secretary, Khumbo Kumwenda, last week said their sponsor, Mzuzu University, has never failed to assist the team financially.

“Just like any other team, before the start of every season we make a budget. But sometimes we overspend, so this causes the team some problems,” he said.

“As such, we have been seeking support from the corporate world just to supplement the money we get from the institution. However, this does not mean that we are broke. It is normal for a team to seek financial assistance from somewhere else.”

Kumwenda did not disclose the money required for the 2017/18 season.

In August last year, Mzuzu University Student Representative Council demanded the resignation of the team’s Chairperson, Felix Bello, just five months after being elected, accusing him of “lacking motivation skills to inspire the team’s stakeholders.”
