By Bernard Mhone:
Mzuni FC have threatened to boycott their TNM Super League fixture against Kamuzu Barracks (KB) on Sunday at Kasungu Stadium if Super League of Malawi (Sulom) fails to settle over K400,000 it owes the team.
Mzuni are demanding costs from Sulom after their May 19 match against KB in Lilongwe was postponed at the eleventh hour because the soldiers were on duty in the May 21 tripartite elections.
A letter dated August 12 2019 and signed by Mzuni General Secretary, Donnex Chilonga, outlines conditions which Sulom must fulfill if the Green Intellectuals are to honour the fixture.
“Sulom did not formally respond to our demands as contained in our letter of complaint dated 20th May 2019. Sulom should shoulder all the bills that Mzuni incurred during the period we were preparing for the cancelled game which include accommodation, meals and allowances.
“Sulom should award Mzuni three points because it was not Mzuni’s fault to have been communicated of the game cancellation at the eleventh hour, but rather indecision by Sulom. In case of further adamancy on awarding points, Sulom to shoulder the cost in respect of any rescheduling of the cancelled game,” reads part of the letter.
In an interview, Chilonga said they wrote a complaint letter to Sulom on May 20 this year besides communicating with the Super League governing body by telephone.
“We agreed on the reimbursement of our expenses but Sulom is failing to implement its part of the deal.
We were only given K50,000 out of the K461,400 which we needed. We need the money urgently because we are a team that is struggling financially. If they fail pay us, we are not going to honour the fixture,” he said.
Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda said in the interest of their agreement and fair play, they would settle the matter.
“Concerned parties in the matter made an agreement and Sulom is going to ensure that it is respected so that the game is played come Sunday at Kasungu Stadium,” Banda said.
Mzuni lie ninth on the log table with 16 points from 14 games while KB are second with 29 points having played 14 matches.
