Mzuzu City Council has new CEO

McDonald Gondwe

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has appointed Gomezgani Nyasulu as new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mzuzu City Council (MCC) following the transfer of Macloud Kadammanja from the position to be Balaka District Commissioner.

A circular from the ministry dated June 11, 2020 signed by its secretary, Charles Kalemba, indicates that the appointment is with immediate effect.

“The appointment will be on contract basis and a contract agreement will be drawn by the government after you have reported for duties,” reads the letter in part.

MCC spokesperson, McDonald Gondwe and the new CEO confirmed the appointment yesterday.

Nyasulu is coming at a time the council is grappling with finances as it is yet to settle five months’ salary arrears of its junior staff.

According to Gondwe, it is the expectation of the council and everyone else to see the city wearing a new face owing to the coming in of the new CEO.

“We anticipate that the new CEO will take challenges that we are facing such as those on finances as his homework. Employees and people in the city are expecting a lot from him because, as you are aware, the council is facing a lot of challenges and he is our hope,” Gondwe said.

The council also faces sanitation challenges as its nearest dumpsite, Msiro, was closed by angry communities which accused the council of failing to meet some of its obligations in ensuring the dumpsite does not pose a threat to lives of people.

Mzuzu is the third largest City in Malawi with a population of over 220,000 people.
