By Bernard Mhone:

Mzuzu Cycling Club (MCC) has raised K200,000 to enable two students to sit their examinations.

The cycling club embarked on a fundraising initiative after learning that two students Connis Mwandira and Abel Mhango were on the verge of being barred from sitting for their examinations.

Mwandira is studying as a Nursing and Midwifery Technician at Ekwendeni College of Health Sciences whereas Mhango is a form 2 student at Rumphi Secondary School.

A member of MCC Marumbo Kaira said the initiative was part of the body’s corporate social responsibility.

“In our activities, we always accommodate the community as we interact on daily basis. We had to raise the figure because the two students will be the ones to help us in future. We learnt about their ordeal through Facebook and Whatsapp,” said Kaira, who is also Cycling Federation of Malawi President.

He also pledged that the club will assist one of the needy students at St John of God College of Health Sciences.

Mwandira commended the club.

“I stay in Nthalire, Chitipa District, and my father cannot afford to pay K588,000 school fees because he is sick. I was demoralised with the situation but now the cycling club has lifted my spirit,” she said.

Apparently, Ekwendeni College of Health Sciences Principal Esau Kasonda said the school had more needy students who were about to drop out.

Mzuzu Cycling Club started in 2010 and has 31 members.
