Mzuzu residents petition First Lady

First Lady Gertrude Mutharika has been dragged into a protracted dispute between the Mzuzu City Council and residents of Mchengautuba a week after she officially commissioned a K100 million Msilo Waste Management Centre.

This is because council authorities continue to use the disputed waste area despite the commissioning of the new facility.

This has not gone down well with a local Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) Friends of Mzuzu Community (Fomco) which has written the First Lady to pour out the people’s frustrations.

Executive Director of the NGO Precious Mtambo said in an interview yesterday that the council has to explain to Mutharika and the nation for fooling her to commission a facility which is not ready for use.

“In her speech, the First Lady expressed hope that the opening of the new site means an end to all the disagreements that have been there between the city council and the people, the current developments are total betrayal and demeaning to her office,” Mtambo said.

He said as patron of the Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust which champions issues of hygiene and sanitation, it is time Mutharika intervened in the matter and helped rescue people of Mchengautuba from the health hazards.
