Mzuzu to host Kamuzu Banda memorial service

The family of Malawi’s founding president, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, has said this year’s memorial service in his honour will be held at Mzuzu Stadium on Sunday.

According to chairperson of the organising committee, Ken Kandodo, this year’s ceremony is special as it marks 20 years since Dr. Banda passed on.

Every year on May 14, the country celebrates the birthday of the late Dr. Banda, who ruled Malawi from 1964 to 1994. He died on November 25, 1997.

Kandodo said this year’s celebrations will be held away from Lilongwe and Kasungu to appreciate the role people in the Northern Region played during the reign of Dr. Banda.

“You will recall that Ngwazi Dr. Banda passed on in November 1997, which makes this year the 20th since his demise. The family thought of doing something special, to have the function in Mzuzu. We have set up a committee in Mzuzu which is looking at the logistics and I am happy that our people in Mzuzu are doing a superb job in terms of preparing for this function. As I speak now, all the arrangements are at an advanced stage. We look forward to a successful memorial service,” Kandodo said.

Kandodo said the family is thankful for the support they have received from various quarters including the government.

He, however, said he looks forward to the day the government would take a leading role in organising the service.

“We have approached the government, and we are yet to hear from them in terms of giving direct support, but of course I have to acknowledge that every time the government gives us support, indirect support, for example in form of security, or giving us access to various venues. You will recall that there was a time we used Civo Stadium and this time we are using Mzuzu Stadium,” Kandodo said.
