Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has mended fences with eight bench officials who went berserk at the end of the Tri-Nation Cosana tournament in June this year.
Nam Vice President Chimwemwe Bakali and executive member Junier Kazembe met the bench officials at Blantyre Youth Centre to resolve the matter.
The bench officials were demanding allowances after working during the three nation tournament at Kamuzu University for Health Sciences Sports Complex.
Initially, there were about 30 officials, who worked on voluntary basis, but the eight were critical to the tournament as they also underwent training.
Sources said following the discussions, bench officials were given about K39, 000 each instead of K50,000.
Bakali said they resolved the matter internally.
“We engaged them on voluntary basis. There was a misunderstanding but all that is now water under the bridge,” he said.
One of the bench officials, Neffie Kammata, who attended the meeting, said they were set to open a new chapter following fruitful discussions.
“We accepted the offer they made in the spirit of sportsmanship,” she said.
The development comes after the competition’s organising committee general secretary Annie Hanjahanja rejected the K20,000 she was given as a stipend for volunteering before and during the tournament.
Hanjahanja said having spent more than what she was offered, she felt it was a mockery.
“If everybody else received that amount then maybe I would have accepted but others who only came for a day and did not work got more than this amount,” she said.
