Nam budget downsized

By Mphatso Malidadi:

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) faces an anxious wait to have its budget approved after Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) reportedly advised the association to trim it.

Sources said Nam presented a budget of over K180 million to the government through MNCS ahead of the netball Queens’ participation in the World Cup in Liverpool, England, from July 12 to 21.

The budget was then trimmed to around K150 million and MNCS has submitted it to the government for approval.

MNCS Executive Secretary, George Jana, declined to go into details but said the budget is still on the higher side.

“But we have submitted it to the Ministry [of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development] for funding. Still more, we feel the budget is on the higher side,” he said.

Jana said Nam exhausted its 2018/19 annual subvention and there was need to source funds from elsewhere.

“Nevertheless, the good thing is that the team will head to England when the 2019/20 budget will be out,” he said.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, confirmed the changes, saying the association hopes that the budget would be approved.

“We were told to revise it and we did that. We are only hoping that everything will go smoothly. Once it is approved, we will outline detailed plans regarding the Queens’ preparations,” she said.
